Fire Protection Design Engineer/Specialist
Job Details:
• Full-time position
• Compensation will be based on skill and experience – $ 85,000 – $135,000 plus bonuses

Position Responsibilities:
• Performs various range of project management responsibilities working in collaboration with team members and principals.
• Responsible for project coordination activities such as managing project communications, coordinating scope and schedule, participating in client/design team meetings, ensuring project quality, responding to client questions and coordinating project delivery.
• Prepares performance specification system layouts for fire protection and fire alarm systems, performs necessary calculations, develop design analysis, detailed drawings and schematics for fire protection and fire alarm system submittals along with supporting team principals in equipment selection and specification development.
• Perform internal quality control reviews ensuring designs are in accordance with applicable codes, standards and project goals.
• Maintains proactive communication throughout project cycle, project scheduling and quality work.
• Performs site investigations to evaluate and document existing conditions.
• Read and interpret construction documents, including drawings and specifications.
• Interpret and apply applicable building codes, NFPA standards and other industry related codes/standards.
• Performs construction administration related activities which include but may not be limited to, shop drawing submittal review, construction progress site observations including technical report generation, attends on an as needed/determined basis commissioning efforts, and assists in resolving conflicts involving owners, architects and contractors as needed.
• Dialogue and coordination with various internal and external project team members, municipality staff and AHJs.
• Performs research, evaluations and makes recommendations to team principals as to the feasibility of systems or equipment for use on a project.
• Provides technical guidance to owners, architects and others when appropriate.
• Collaborates on business development or pursuit activities with company ownership and other department team principals.
• Participates in client, company and/or industry events to build and maintain professional relationships.
• Fosters a client-centric mindset and approach.
• The position is based out of Overland Park, KS and includes minimal travel (up to 10%).
Job Expectations and Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field of engineering (ie: mechanical or fire protection) and 3+ years of relevant experience or 5+ years of experience with high school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Fire alarm and fire sprinkler performance design experience (SD-CD) or someone with CA experience looking to transition into design
• Intermediate knowledge and proficiency in engineering design, codes, design guides and standards required.
• Intermediate proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD and Bluebeam required.
• High technical aptitude: ability to learn, understand and utilize various computer programs and cloud-based file/model sharing programs.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with internal and external team members, clients and AHJ’s and have ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Team oriented and willingness and ability to function in a highly collaborative environment, on group projects and assisting less experienced designers.
• Adapts to changing work environments, priorities and organizational needs.
• Responsible, personable, and self-motivated with excellent organization and time management skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
Preferred:
• Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
• Registered Professional Fire Protection Engineer (FPE)
• Certifications and accreditations aligned with relevant technical field (e.g., NICET) (or currently working through the process of becoming certified)
• Project management and client relationship experience
